Fun fact about groundhogs: They can sometimes be smarter than your average weasel.

According to Wikipedia, Groundhog Day was adopted in the U.S. in 1887. Clymer H. Freas was the editor of the local paper Punxsutawney Spirit at the time, and he began promoting the town’s groundhog as the official “Groundhog Day meteorologist”.

Groundhogs think the whole idea is rather strange and attribute it’s origins to people being a bit loony by the end of Winter.
