Naturally, Dave Kellet did it better, but I felt like giving it a shot. I’ve been thinking about this sketch since the rains that passed through last week.

Here’s is a sketch I played with when working the Nashville Comic & Horror Festival. All of the characters are based on people seen on the Convention floor except one, can you guess which one?

It all started with a hanging lamp. I was messing around late a few nights ago and decided to see where this sketch would go. Well, here you go, strangeness and all!

Time to get back the swing of things, here’s a bit of the crowd in between things.

This week you have seen taxes, then there was another that cannot be avoided (in the South at least), pollen. Now is the final constant we all must face…DEATH!

Well, sort of, in this particular case.

This sketch is done with many thanks to my friend Sean, who made a comment and this popped into my head because of it! Go check his stuff, out he has a great eye for things.

Something else of note for this is that I used a new brush pen that Angela has been pestering me for a long time to try out. Yes my dear, I like the line quality, maybe I will warm up to these things yet!

I was pretty tired that day and was pretty close to skipping this month’s Drink & Draw, I’m glad I didn’t.

The basic concept I have for the Sunday Sketch is to challenge myself in some way with the drawing and/or to practice with marker shading. I’ve been wanting to do some fan art for the other artists’ I enjoy and this felt like a good match. Monster Commute is a great comic by Daniel S. Davis and I hope he gets a giggle from this! Just remember, the art is my work, but the characters and concepts are the copyright of Mr. Davis (no, not the Garfield one).

I scanned the comic before shading it, just in case I hammered it. I’m debating which on I like better, what do you think?

This guy was a quick sketch while we were waiting for the models to get ready. I was originally going to leave it in pencil, until deciding that it was a good chance to play around with a brush pen and markers. I love the fluid lines of the brush pen, but it’s a bit of a process learning how to control the thing!

Here are a few of the figure sketches that I did at the Mellow Mushroom in Decatur a couple weeks ago. The first couple are quick studies done of actor Chris Burns dressed as Spider-Man. The last one is of his wife Miracole Burns, a makeup artist and professional costumer. I didn’t mess with the faces because of wanting to focus on the figure itself. While I have plenty of issues with the work, I’m pleased with the ink line quality and the general improvement in the figures from the last couple Drink & Draws. As long as I keep making progress, I can deal with the process.

I wondered, do cherubs ever need more firepower than just arrows? I thought a bit and came up with this.

Fun fact about bazookas: It’s a bad idea to fire them when flying, the kickback is pretty strong!

The Sunday Sketch is an occasional series I wanted to start for 2011. As it states, it’s a random sketch on posted on Sunday. In this case, it was done in pencil, pen and marker during the Super Bowl. The mental image of a small dude running like hell from the NFL bruisers amused me.

Here is a bit of a preview of what I’m working on for this year’s Christmas Card. I did the inking with a brush pen (gasp!) and scanned it. Once that was finished, I used the art to test some color ideas with some old (15 years since I bought them!) markers. Two thoughts came to mind:

• I can’t believe the markers worked at all after all this time (yay Design2 Art Markers!).
• I think Angela might be a better colorist than me. I may need to get her some markers and give her a shot at this sort of thing.
